Digital Social Touch Toolkit: a research tool for studying attitudes towards digital touch

We present the Digital Social Touch Toolkit, a research tool in development aimed at the systematic study of differences in attitudes regarding the ethics of digital social touch interactions. The toolkit consists of cards depicting digital touch interactions that participants should place on rating scales based on their attitude towards the scenario allowing for effective and efficient data gathering for quantitative research.

  • Future Affair: An Artistic Exploration of Socially Distanced Affective Touch via Forearm Stimulation

Amy den Dekker, Laura A Dima, Gijs Huisman, Daniel Shor

Abstract— ‘Future Affair’ is a project to explore affective touch and interpersonal connection using tactile sculptures and robotics. Our initial work focuses on C-Tactile afferent-optimal touch, with one individual stimulating the other through a mediated stroking touch experience. Here, we describe the first steps in creating a socially distanced intimate connection between two individuals.

  • TACTimat: Exploring the Design Factors of An Effective Touch Based Tool for Stimulation Therapy

Marjolein Schoorl, Laura A. Dima, Kikki de Laat, Erik Tempelman, Daniel Shor, Gijs Huisman

Abstract— TACTimat is a therapy tool developed for both hyper and hyposensitive children through a novel art and design focused approach. Our initial study explores how shape, texture, and density of elements on a tactile mat may influence the behaviour of young children with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or other cognitive disability during tactile exploration.
