This piece challenges the audience to reflect on the nature of consent in an age where we have limited control over our sensitive data. Visitors cannot switch off the transmission of their physiological signals, just as we cannot stop breathing or our hearts from beating. Instead, the work invites them to slow down, deconstruct social interactions, and explore the emotional feedback loops that may emerge.
Breathers is a variation of the Bellies project, differing in form and setup. Like the previous project, sensors detect the visitor's heartbeat and breathing patterns, transmitting this data to another sculpture, which then simulates the biodata. Bellies takes the shape of an alien-like organ worn on the torso, merging two bodies through technology. Breathers, however, consists of two pods that follow a similar concept but engage participants through hand-held interaction. Aesthetically, the pods resemble the buds of ceramic sculptures, evoking the appearance of stems and bulbs.
